First Draft and Africa Check Invites you to a Verification and Fact Checking Day
First Draft and Africa Check are hosting a Verification & Fact-Checking Summit to mark International Fact-Checking Day on April 2, 2019, at the Wits Club, University of the Witwatersrand. The event will bring together journalists, researchers, analysts, students, community leaders and innovators from across Johannesburg who seeks to examine the validity of information online and raise awareness of fact-checking and verification of online content.
The summit has been designed so that participants walk away with cutting-edge skills and best practices in:
- Fact-checking basics; what it is and why it is important
- Fact-checking elections
- Tools used in fact-checking and verification
- Identification of disinformation networks and campaigns
- Verification of images and videos
- Responsible reporting on disinformation to prevent giving oxygen to rumours and conspiracies
- Protecting journalists from manipulation campaigns
The event has also been designed with sessions for participants to test out the fact-checking and verification tools and to identify and report misinformation online. Participants will leave with tools, methods and strategies to identify tactics and targets for South African misinformation and disinformation.
Attendance at this event is by invitation only. You have been selected as a valuable contributor by one of our team members or partners.
