Renewal of Press Cards for May 29 National and Provincial 2024 Elections
Urgent Appeal: Renewal of Press Cards for 2024 May 29 National and Provincial Elections
Dear Editors and Media Houses,
The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) has issued an urgent appeal to the South African National Editors’ Forum (SANEF) to notify media houses about the imperative need to ensure that their teams possess renewed or updated press cards ahead of the 2024 May national and provincial elections.
Press cards serve as indispensable tools for facilitating smooth access to voting or polling stations. They are readily recognized and accepted by both the members of the South African Police Services and the IEC electoral staff across all voting stations. In the interests of ensuring seamless coverage of this critical event, it is imperative that all media personnel possess valid and up-to-date press cards.
Furthermore, it is essential to highlight that press cards are critical for the application for accreditation at the IEC regional and national results operation centres throughout the country. The application deadline for accreditation at these centres is fast approaching, with closure set for May 10. Alternatively, an official editor’s letter with a company letter head authorising journalists and photojournalists with their ID details.
We urge all media houses to prioritise the renewal or update of press cards for their respective teams to ensure unhindered access to voting stations and accreditation at the IEC results operation centres. Failure to do so may impede the ability of media personnel to fulfil their crucial role in providing accurate and timely coverage of the elections.
Your cooperation in this matter is greatly appreciated, as it contributes to upholding the integrity and transparency of the electoral process.
