Remembering Stephen Wrottesley: A Legacy of Dedication and Excellence
Stephen Wrottesley, a name etched in the annals of South African journalism, was a pillar of the media community and one of the founding members of the South African National Editors’ Forum (Sanef). As Chief of Staff for Independent Newspapers, his distinguished career was marked by his unwavering commitment to truth and integrity. Tragically, in 2003, at the age of forty-seven (47), Wrottesley’s life was cut short by a fatal car accident in Cape Town. He passed away in the hospital, leaving behind a legacy that continues to inspire.
Wrottesley’s journey in journalism began at the Cape Argus, where he served as an exceptional crime reporter and gained renown as news editor. His fearless reporting on illegal whaling earned him the prestigious Stellenbosch Farmers’ Winery Journalism Award, a testament to his dedication to uncovering the truth. However, it was equally significant his selfless contributions to Sanef that to date earned him the honour of an award names after him. He played a crucial role in its formation and nobly served on its executive committee for many years, guiding the forum with his altruism, wisdom, and vision.
In honour of his remarkable contributions, Sanef established the Sanef-Wrottesley Award, a peer recognition award celebrating extraordinary commitment to the association’s goals. This award is a tribute to Wrottesley’s enduring spirit and dedication. Any Sanef member in good standing can submit a nomination, accompanied by a short motivation, to the Sanef Management Committee. The recipient of this prestigious award is honoured with a framed certificate and a financial token, recognising their exceptional efforts in furthering Sanef’s mission.
Stephen Wrottesley’s legacy is one of courage, integrity, and an unyielding commitment to the highest standards of journalism. His memory lives on through the Sanef-Wrottesley Award, inspiring current and future generations of Sanef members to strive for excellence and uphold the principles of selfless service to the journalism fraternity that Wrottesley so passionately championed.
