LEGAL MATTERS
SANEF has over the years been involved in several legal matters that all sought to ensure media freedom is upheld, and journalists are allowed to do their work.
In recent years, SANEF has directed funds towards its Media Defence Fund, to which organisations such as the National Press Club have contributed. The Fund, whose coffers are mainly raised through SANEF’s Annual Fundraiser Dinner, has come in handy as SANEF approaches the court, as seen in several legal cases below. Since 2016, SANEF has been holding an annual “Black Wednesday” gala fundraising dinner, which has now become one of the most important events on our calendar.
Work of the Fund
To date, SANEF has used our legal fund for several cases, such as Riot Hlatshwayo versus the Mpumalanga Police Commissioner, amaBhungane versus the Moti Group and the Zandile Gumede, former eThekwini mayor, where the media was nearly denied access.
