Call for Bids (2022): Event Management Services for Nat Nakasa Awards (Durban) and Fundraising Dinner (Johannesburg)
The South African National Editors’ Forum (SANEF) invites event management companies to bid to manage one or both distinct and symbolic annual events in the calendar of the organisation.
SANEF is an influential organisation within the media fraternity in South Africa. It is a non-profit organisation whose members are title editors, senior journalists, academics, veteran media practitioners who operate in print, broadcasting, and digital media. The membership also consists of regional and community media editors and journalism trainers from major journalism training institutions across South Africa.
SANEF’s vision is to promote quality and ethical journalism, while reflecting the diversity of South Africa, and to champion freedom of expression.
We advocate for media freedom through statements, policy submissions, research and education and training programmes.
Event #1: Nat Nakasa Awards (Durban)
Nat Nakasa was a prominent South African journalist and writer who died in exile in 1965 and the awards are held in his honour. The Nat Nakasa Awards rank among SANEF’s flagship events. The main award is handed to an individual or a team of journalists who have shown courage and tenacity in the face of enormous challenges and displayed a commitment to serve South Africans with integrity, resisted censorship, and striven for truth and accuracy in their reporting.
The second award is called the Nat Nakasa Award: Community Media, awarded to ensure that courage is highlighted within the community media sector. This award is dedicated to a community media journalist and/or editor who has shown integrity and reported fearlessly, displayed a commitment to serve the people of South Africa, tenaciously striven to maintain a publication or other medium despite insurmountable obstacles, resisted any censorship and shown courage in making information available to the SA public.
The winners are selected by a jury based on nominations submitted by the public.
SANEF also uses the event to announce the recipient of the SANEF-Wrottesley Award in recognition of excellent service to the organisation and extraordinary commitment to work towards the achievement of the association’s goals.
The Nat Nakasa Awards ceremony, usually in the form of an awards dinner event (in-person and live streamed), is scheduled for the evening of Saturday 17 September 2022 in Durban.
While SANEF has opened the tender to all, the successful bidder must demonstrate the experience and capacity to organise such a high-profile event in Durban at a reasonable budget.

- If shortlisted, the bidder will be required to prepare a slide deck for presentation to the bid committee
Event #2: SANEF Fundraising Dinner (Johannesburg)
In 2016, SANEF decided to hold an annual fundraising dinner for the purpose of mobilising financial resources for the organisation to ensure its sustainability and secure funds for legal costs to safeguard media freedom rights for journalists.
Since 2017, SANEF’s Annual Fundraising dinner coincided with the commemoration of the 40th anniversary of Black Wednesday. Annually, SANEF commemorates Black Wednesday to emphasise the importance of media freedom and reflect on the fateful, eventful day of 19 October 1977, when several newspapers aligned with Black Consciousness movements were banned by the then Apartheid government.
Event details:
- The SANEF Annual Fundraising Dinner (or breakfast in case of a health crisis, such as COVID-19 alert level classification) is scheduled for Friday, 21 October 2022 in Johannesburg.
