FP&M Seta Empowers Women in the Media
22 August 2018
South African women in the media will benefit from a Fibre, Processing and Manufacturing (FP&M) Seta grant to support the 2018 Media Management Skills programme promoted by the South African National Editors Forum (SANEF) and delivered by frayintermedia.
The PF&M discretionary grant announced this week will support SANEF’s efforts to increase the presence of women leaders in the media in South Africa through, among others, online training, a Wits University Media Management Certificate and targeted training.
“The programme aims to address some of the industry’s most critical challenges, including increasing diversity in terms of race and gender of media leaders by providing quality skills training for modern media environments,” said SANEF executive director Kate Skinner.
This programme is one of SANEF’s initiatives to help meet the organisation’s aim to champion South Africa’s hard-won freedom of expression and it promotes quality, ethics and diversity in the South African media.
“We are very pleased to have the FP&M Seta on board. SANEF is deeply committed to the course and we are looking forward to being a part of the process of cultivating the next wave of female media leaders”, said Skinner.
The 2018 programme builds on previous successful programmes. Alumni include Move editor, Zenoyise John; The Herald and Weekend Post editor, Nwabisa Makunga; and, Isolezwe editor, Slindile Khanyile.
The frayintermedia media management skills programme has been delivered in over 15 countries in sub-Saharan Africa and the MENA regions.
“FP&M’s support has been invaluable in helping us build a cadre of women with the skills to lead in the media industry. The format for training also allows us to build a real network of practitioners who not only have the skills to lead but the skills to lead in an ever-changing environment,” said frayintermedia managing director Paula Fray.
The skills programme consists of an online media management foundation short course, a Wits University Media Management certificate block course in Johannesburg (NQF 8), career and professional development coaching and access to a network of industry leaders.
All Editors are urged to nominate candidates for the skills programmes. The first run of the online course will begin 1 September 2018. Limited spaces are available and candidates meeting requirements will be notified by frayintermedia.
