Nominations Open for Nat Nakasa and Moses Moyo Awards for Courageous Journalism – 2019

On 1 March 2019 the South African National Editors’ Forum (SANEF) announced that nominations were open for the Nat Nakasa awards 2019.

We are now excited to introduce a new award for the community media industry, the Moses Moyo Award, in memory of the late community media journalist Moses Moyo who passed away in October 2018. He was the founder of the popular Inner City Gazette and a long standing, SANEF council member. He was deeply passionate and committed to strengthening media freedom.

The Moses Moyo Award recognizes any community media practitioner – journalist, editor, manager or owner – who has:

  • Shown bravery in covering issues that affect South African communities;
  • Displayed commitment to strengthening the community media industry; and
  • Shown dedication to ensuring the sustainability of community media and bringing to the fore challenges facing this section of the industry.

The ceremony for the Moses Moyo Award for brave and courageous journalism will be held at the Nat Nakasa Award gala dinner on Saturday 22 June 2019.

 

Nat Nakasa Award

 

Nat Nakasa was a prominent South African journalist and writer who died in exile in 1965. The annual Nat Nakasa award is awarded for courageous and brave journalism. The award recognises any media practitioner – journalist, editor, manager or owner – who has:

 

*      Shown integrity and reported fearlessly;

*      Displayed a commitment to serve the people of South Africa;

*      Tenaciously striven to maintain a publication or other medium despite insurmountable obstacles;

*      Resisted any censorship; and

*      Shown courage in making information available to the SA public.

 

The winner is selected by a jury on the basis of nominations submitted by the public.
