SANEF mourns the passing of media freedom activist and community media pioneer Edward Mzwandile Mangxaba
The South African National Editors’ Forum (SANEF) mourns the untimely passing of media freedom activist, editor, publisher, broadcaster, filmmaker, and cultural advocate Edward Mzwandile Mangxaba, who died at age 75.
Mangxaba dedicated more than four decades of his life to advancing indigenous-language media, preserving South Africa’s rich cultural heritage, and amplifying the voices of communities often overlooked by mainstream media. His passing marks a significant loss to the South African media industry, particularly the community media sector, where his contribution was both profound and enduring.
For 16 years, Mangxaba devoted himself to publishing ‘Dizindaba News’, building it into a respected community publication that informed, educated, and empowered communities across the Western Cape and beyond. Through his leadership and vision, the publication became an important platform for local storytelling, civic engagement, and community development.
Throughout his distinguished career, Mangxaba remained steadfast in his commitment to strengthening community media, promoting indigenous languages, and nurturing local talent. His work transcended traditional journalism, extending into broadcasting, filmmaking, publishing, and cultural advocacy. He was a passionate believer in the power of media to uplift communities and preserve cultural identity.
His unwavering dedication to community journalism and indigenous-language media earned him the respect and admiration of colleagues throughout the country. The legacy he leaves behind is one of service, empowerment, and an enduring commitment to media diversity and inclusion.
SANEF Freelancers and Community Media subcommittee chairperson, Dunisani Ntsanwisi, described Mangxaba as a respected elder and champion of indigenous-language media. “Bra Ed was deeply enthusiastic about ensuring access to news in indigenous languages and was dedicated to the growth and sustainability of the community media sector. His contribution to media development and language preservation will not be forgotten,” said Ntsanwisi.
Veteran Cape Town publisher and long-time friend, Joseph Bushby, paid tribute to Mangxaba’s commitment to transforming the media landscape and creating opportunities for others. “Bra Ed was deeply respected for his warm nature and his unwavering commitment to opening opportunities within the South African media and advertising industry. While his passing leaves a profound void, we remain inspired by his vision and determined to continue the work he championed,” said Bushby.
Mangxaba’s contribution to community media, indigenous-language journalism, and cultural preservation will be remembered for generations to come. His life’s work stands as a testament to the significant role that community media plays in strengthening democracy, preserving cultural heritage, and ensuring that every community has a voice.
SANEF extends its heartfelt condolences to his wife, Anetta, the Mangxaba family, friends, colleagues, and the broader media fraternity during this grim time. May his soul rest in peace.
