SANEF’S 2011 AGM AND NAT NAKASA AWARD DINNER

National Police Commissioner General Bheki Cele will be the guest speaker at the South African National Editors’ Forum (SANEF) AGM, to be held on Friday, September 16, 2011, in Cape Town. The theme of this year’s AGM is: Media and the Law.

The AGM and council meeting will be followed by the annual Nat Nakasa Awards Dinner at the Table Bay Hotel. Heather Brooke, a UK-based journalist, will be the special keynote speaker at the dinner.

Brooke has won many awards for her work which saw her successfully using the UK’s Freedom of Information Act to secure information about British MPs’ fraudulent expense claims in 2008 and more extensively in 2009. In 2007, she also won a landmark legal case that led the BBC to disclose the minutes of a Board of Governors’ meeting. She has published three books: Your Right to Know: A Citizen’s Guide to Freedom of Information; The Silent State: How Secrecy and Misinformation are Destroying Democracy; and
The Revolution Will Be Digitised.
